SSR Lifesciences improves, prolongs and saves people’s lives by providing medical-grade porcine materials used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals for cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases and many other indications; and in devices and biomaterials used for healing wounds and replacing or repairing parts of malfunctioning organs such as heart valves.
Many advances in medicine have resulted from the use of porcine materials. For example, bioprosthetic porcine heart valves provide an important treatment option for more than 90,000 patients in the U.S. each year suffering from heart valve disease. The discovery of insulin for diabetes in the 1920s was a significant medical advance that saved many lives, and pigs were the source of insulin until research led to other ways to produce insulin in a laboratory. Given the similarity between pig and human organs, pigs also have made an important contribution to medical research, including advances in organ transplantation that save tens of thousands of lives every year.
As part of a network that is the largest supplier of sow materials, we respect and understand the use of porcine materials for many industries. Through the process, we are committed to the most humane treatment of animals. In partnership with our customers, we also maintain a strong dedication to reducing the waste of materials that can be used in life-enhancing and life-saving research and medical products.
As a company, we are deeply committed to positively impacting our environment and industry by strictly adhering to key pillars of Animal Welfare and Sustainability.
